Securities professionals provide financial advice in addition to buying and selling securities including stocks and bonds. This profession offers a wide range of jobs and opportunities for career growth such as working directly with clients, as a relationship marketer, or in a support staff role. 

About FINRA

Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) administers the majority of exams that you will are required to take whichever securities path you choose. They mandate securities licensing and requirements. North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) is the association of state securities administrators who are charged with the responsibility of protecting consumers who purchase securities or investment advice.

Who can take the Series 6 exam? 

The Series 6 exam is a prerequisite for registered representatives who deal in investment companies, variable annuities, and life insurance contracts. To become registered as a representative, individuals must successfully pass both the SIE and Series 6 exams.

You are required to first pass the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam.

  • Anyone age 18 or older can take the Series 6 exam.
  • Firm sponsorship or association is a requirement for the Series 6 exam.

The Series 6 exam is governed by FINRA. The exam assesses the competency of an entry-level representative to perform their job as an investment company and variable contracts products representative.

The exam measures the degree to which each candidate possesses the knowledge needed to perform the critical functions of an investment company and variable contract products representative, including sales of mutual funds and variable annuities.
